Módulo II Gallinas Ponedoras, Lima, 2025
From May 12 to 16, 2025, WVEPAH held its Módulo II Gallinas Ponedoras in Lima, Peru, bringing together poultry professionals and veterinarians from across Latin America for an intensive and enriching week of specialized training.
Poultry Health & Performance
The course opened with a welcome from our Poultry Coordinator branch and the WVEPAH General Director, followed by in-depth sessions led by Dr. Daniel Valbuena, covering key aspects of rearing and production.
Topics included:
Preparation of poultry houses and water systems
Brooding practices: density, temperature, feed presentation, lighting
Early viability challenges: dehydration, overheating, “non-starters”
Common early infections: aspergillosis, omphalitis, and Pseudomonas
Participants engaged in case studies, allowing them to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios.
Nutrition, Metabolism & Illumination
The week continued with Dr. Vitor Arantes, who explored:
Calcium and phosphorus metabolism
Feeding principles
Lighting programs adapted for open and closed housing systems
Interactive case studies encouraged collaborative problem-solving, and a session with participants highlighted how to optimize their WVEPAH educational path.
Field Visit to La Calera
Wednesday offered a unique opportunity to witness advanced layer production practices during a field visit to La Calera, one of Peru’s most modern poultry operations. Participants toured the facilities and discussed on-site implementation of training concepts, followed by a group lunch.
Laboratory Work
Thursday’s sessions, led by Dr. Eliana Icochea , emphasized laboratory sampling and analysis techniques. Participants also examined the relationship between yolk color, nutrition, and gut health. The day concluded with group case studies, further reinforcing diagnostic and management skills.
Vaccinology, Biosecurity & Roundtable Exchange
On the final day, Dr. Stéphane Lemière provided comprehensive instruction in vaccination programs for commercial layers, including equipment use, recombinant vaccines, and an introduction to mRNA vaccine technology. A roundtable led by Dr. Eliana Icochea closed the module, highlighting current updates in avian influenza, biosecurity, and animal welfare—critical areas for all poultry health professionals.
The Lima module was more than a course—it was a collaborative experience built around the shared goal of advancing veterinary practices in poultry production. WVEPAH thanks all Course Masters, participants, and partners for making this training a success and a week to remember!
