“World Veterinary Education in Production Animal Health”
WVEPAH is the second branch of “European Association for Veterinary Specialization” EAVS, a non-profit organization registered in Luxembourg since 1989. EAVS promoted the transnational organization of Veterinary Specialization in Europe with the support of the EU. In 1992 it created the “European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies” (ESAVS, http://www.esavs.org) in the frame of the COMET programs of the EU to support the concept of veterinary specialization by offering high quality continuing education as a recruitment platform for future specialists.
The ESAVS, mainly addressing the companion animal area, has been very successful. Educational programs are organized in 27 locations in Europe and 6 in China mostly at Universities with more than 1 000 participants each year, coming from more than 50 countries. In 2005 the ESAVS became officially affiliated with the Luxembourg University offering European Certificate and European Master programs in the field of companion animal veterinary medicine.
Inspired by this experience, WVEPAH was launched in response to the great need for continuing education in the field of production animals, for professionals with either a veterinary or agricultural science background. Based on the ESAVS model, an international platform, for well recognized teachers in their field, was created and combined with an efficient organization for recruiting participants and for managing all practical aspects of the training. The association with the University of Luxemburg ensures quality control and academic conformity of the training.
WVEPAH was created in 2010 with the support of the OIE. It offers training programs in the field of production animals in order to improve knowledge of professionals in this field and also to allow them a better implementation of the “OIE recommendations”. Participants, being experts already, may improve their know-how and knowledge in all aspects of their area of expertise. The aim is that upon their return they can apply it in their daily practice, at university or in their company. WVEPAH could also function as a recruiting platform for future specialists.
Participants aiming to have their acquired learning validated by university degrees may take the internationally recognized Certificate and / or Master examinations of the Luxemburg University validated at a worldwide level by the OIE.
As far as poultry production is concerned, the examination for the “Certificate in Animal Health: Poultry Production” requires the participation to Module I “Disciplines common to all species + regulatory aspects of OIE” as well as one of the specialized modules Chicken, Egg Layer, Turkey or Water Fowl. The Master requires holding the Certificate and the participation to a second specialized module. See respective sections.
The WVEPAH is a continuing education organization. It recruits expert teachers and students, provides full logistic support (registration, course location, management etc.) in cooperation with the Luxemburg University responsible for ensuring the quality standard. The course masters are responsible for the program content, the structure of which is consistent with the teaching concept of the WVEPAH. The latter is described under “study programs”.
