OVERVIEW

The course « Broiler chickens part II » follows the first one and will cover both broiler chickens and breeders. A full day course on commercial layer diseases has been added because most of the practitioners also cover this field of activity. In depth coverage of specific diseases (leucosis, mycoplasmosis, etc.) will be followed by a course on epidemiological methods necessary to the understanding and control of infectious avian diseases. The role and policies of the OIE will also be reviewed. Topics of great importance will also be covered, antibiotics and antibioresistance, animal welfare, poultry nutrition, poultry genetic development. Topics covered during the first course will be reviewed (diagnostic methods, biosecurity, preventive medicine) because they are essential tools for the practitioners, every day.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Know how to evaluate the birds’ microenvironment in relation to flock health and welfare.
Gain advanced knowledge relating to mechanisms of disease causation for infectious and non-infectious diseases.
Recognize normal poultry tissues and recognize abnormal poultry tissues, characterize lesions, and interpret their significance.
Understand modern diagnostic technologies including both field and laboratory diagnostics.
Plan a logical diagnostic approach to the investigation of disease (including the identification of risk and causative factors of poultry diseases).
Collect appropriate diagnostic samples and perform relevant diagnostic tests for disease investigation.
Know how to interpret diagnostic results.
Learn to develop or adjust preventive medicine protocols, including biosecurity, coccidiosis, and vaccination protocols.
Regarding biosecurity, know practical ways to improve compliance for on-farm measures, including integrated pest management (rodents and insects).
Apply the judicious use of antibiotic therapy.
Know supportive and alternative forms of treatment against microbial pathogens.
Although the main focus will be commercial meat birds, this training program will include an introduction to turkey breeders (chicken breeders), food safety, and welfare.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

During the morning sessions, topics are presented in interactive lectures supported by case presentations. The afternoons are reserved for wet labs and problem solving in small groups.

“ALTERNATIVE WAY”

Requirements for registration, conditions and rules:

1) Candidates send their detailed CV: duration of professional activity in Aviculture, copy of their diplomas in Aviculture (German Specialist, DESS, CEAV, British Certificate, Master…). These are equivalent to a number of ECTs. Each application will be examined by the WVEPAH for validation.

2) They register from level I – Comprehensive in Dakar for French speakers, in Berlin for English sp., in Mexico for Spanish sp., but are exempted from physically attending this first session.

3) They receive the complete course content like the other participants in order to prepare the examination. They pay reduced registration fees 1.250€ including the distance learning for one year. If they want to receive the classic preregistration package including the Cornell University DVDs, the forthcoming “Avian Pathology Manual” written by Prof. Jean-Pierre Vaillancourt, Prof. Jeanne Brugère and Co. plus some documents and information an additional 250€ will have to be paid. The total fee will be 1.500€.

4) They fully participate in the distance learning between the two courses to acquire some ECTs.

5) They attend the residential module “Advanced” in one of the three locations including the OIE “Regulation module” to complete their knowledge and skills in accordance with the Certificate criteria. The whole gives them the complimentary ECTs number to be allowed to take the Certificate examination.

6) They take the exam like the other participants for « Certificate in Production Animal Health *Poultry Production and Health* whose “Regulation module” is validated by the OIE. This exam is not to set a trap for the examinees but is only to make sure that they have reached the level “standard” of competence.

7) They are holding the “Certificate in Production Animal Health *Poultry Production and Health” CPAH *PPH.

The Dakar course took place from 17th to 28th March 2014. The distance learning will only start in June 2014, so registrations through the “Alternative way” will stay open until 31st May 2014 which gives the participants some time to organize themselves.
